讲座:Dr. Christine Guo,QIMR Berghofer

Selective Network Breakdown in Neurodegenerative Diseases – Connecting the Dots Between Cell and Behaviour报告摘要:Neurodegenerative diseases selectively target subpopulations of neurons, leading to the progressive breakdown of specific brain networks. Recently, we found synchronous fMRI signals could identify intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) in healthy subjects that are selectively targeted in neurodegenerative illness. Some of these ICNs, specifically, “Default Mode Network” and “Salience network”, undergo reciprocal changes in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Strikingly, graph theory analysis revealed that these network hubs could pinpoint to pathology at the cellular level. Our research now focused on the brain-body connection, i.e., the interaction between cortical networks and autonomic nervous system. The salience network, in particular on the left side, plays a pivotal role in cortical autonomic control; damages to the salience network could compromise autonomic function, further underlying emotion disturbances in bvFTD.报告人简介:Dr. Christine Guo, QIMR Berghofer. Dr. Guo received a B.Sc in Biological Sciences from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Stanford University, School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral training at the Memory and Aging Center (UCSF). She has broad research experience, from molecular biology and genetics to electrophysiology and systems neuroscience. Her work focuses on understanding selective vulnerability at the network level in health and in neurodegenerative diseases, using modern neuroimaging techniques. She is also developing neuroimaging methods to understand the body-brain interaction and its breakdown in neurological and psychiatric disorders.
